Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a range of hair styles for productions in the film, television and live entertainment industries.It applies to individuals who use a range of cutting, temporary colouring, setting and dressing methods to produce current and period hairstyles for performers. They may work independently or as a member of a make-up and hair design team. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

hair products, styling aids and tools

productions requiring current and period styles and finishes

hair design reference materials.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify typical problems with providing hairdressing services and briefly describe solutions

explain health, hygiene and safety requirements that apply to the provision of hairdressing services

describe the process for producing hair designs

explain how hair design can enhance characterisation

describe typical theatre salon procedures for creating period hairstyles

explain how physical appearance can influence the process of designing hairstyles

explain how skin tone can be affected by the way hair colour appears under lights.
